When a UK charitable foundation began reassessing how the investment of its capital supported its long-term mission, it faced a familiar challenge: strong intent, but a need for greater clarity, alignment and structure.
Over 12 months, we worked alongside the CEO, Investment Committee and Trustee Board to reshape the foundation’s investment framework to align with its purpose and mission. The objective was not simply to refresh policy documents, but to ensure that its investment objectives, strategy, governance and approach to stewardship and sustainability were aligned and capable of supporting consistent, well-informed decision-making.
Strengthening the Investment Policy Framework
We began with a comprehensive review of the existing investment approach and oversight structures. This surfaced gaps in accountability, manager expectations and policy articulation. Through close engagement with the charity’s leadership and board, we developed an Investment Policy Statement and stewardship framework covering all asset classes. The process was iterative and collaborative, ensuring Trustee Board and Investment Committee, ownership and practical applicability.
Building Capability within the Team, Board and Investment Committee
Recognising that policies and processes alone do not drive long-term success, we next focused on capability. We developed tailored training materials and delivered targeted sessions for the CEO, senior leadership team, Trustee Board and Investment Committee.
These sessions focused on investment, sustainability and stewardship to ensure alignment, enhance confidence and promote the effective implementation of the new investment policy. We also supported the communication of the new approach to external investment managers, ensuring expectations were clearly articulated and understood.
Leadership recruitment to embed change
Finally, to embed the strategy for the long term, we supported the recruitment of an Investment Director. From role design through to candidate selection and interview guidance, we helped secure a dedicated leader to carry the strategy forward.
